What is the difference between intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization?

Artificial Insemination consists of the introduction of a sperm sample, previously prepared in the laboratory, inside the woman’s uterus. This way, the distance between egg and sperm is reduced, increasing the possibilities of fertilization.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technique in which the fertilization process occurs outside the woman’s body. It presupposes hormonal stimulation followed by collection of oocytes that will be fertilized by spermatozoa in suitable culture medium (in vitro). The resulting embryo is transferred to the woman’s uterus in order to obtain a successful pregnancy.
