Why donate oocytes?Who can donate?Donation Associated RisksDonation Compensation: Oocytes and Gametes

Being an oocytes donor helps a large group of infertile women otherwise they will be unable to conceive.

Problems related to infertility are becoming more frequent. Across the world, about 50 million couples face problems conceiving children. It is estimated that in Portugal alone, 10 to 15% of couples have difficulties conceiving children. Surely you know or met someone who is in this situation.

Through oocytes donation, you will help women who dream to become mothers and have problems getting pregnant because:

  • Their ovaries do not work, either because of advanced age or because of diseases that have reduced oocytes supply;
  • They carry serious genetic diseases for offspring;
  • Do not respond to medication ou when they do their oocytes are of poor quality.

Oocytes donation is voluntary. It should always be carried out as an act of solidarity made with the goal of helping couples fulfil the dream of having children.

Why donate at Clinimer?

The CLINIMER has dedicated over a decade to help couples with fertility problems, offering them the best techniques of Assisted Reproduction. We are a group of physicians and embryologists who are experts in Reproductive Medicine and we have helped multiple couples fulfil their dream of becoming parents, in some cases only possible thanks to the donation of oocytes.

As an egg donor, you will do a complete gynecological examination, blood tests, and oocytes stock assessment as well as some genetic tests. This information may be helpful to you in the future if you decide to become a mother.

The clinical evaluation we performed includes:

  • Complete clinical history and gynecological examination with ultrasound for evaluating the uterus and ovaries
  • Karyotype: a test that tells us the status of the chromosomes
  • Serologies: Blood tests to exclude infections (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, and others)

We also conduct a psychological interview to understand and explain the circumstances of the donation. The whole process is carried out in an environment with total privacy and permanent medical monitoring.

The law allows financial compensation to the donor for the inconvenience, displacement and time spent during the donation process.

All healthy women between the ages of 18 and 35, with no history of alcohol or drug dependence or family history of hereditary diseases, may be potential donors.

The final selection depends on a medical appointment, psychology consultation and some clinical tests that confirm the suitability of the donation.

The candidate’s process will be saved until a matching couple appears.

Each woman can make a maximum of 3 donations, within a minimum of 6 months apart.

The process involves the stimulation of the ovaries with injectable medication that is usually well tolerated. In rare cases the ovaries may have a bigger response to this medication, causing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome that leads to the discontinuation of treatment.

In some cases, abdominal pain and distention can easily occur with analgesics drugs.

There is no risk of future infertility for donors and there is usually normalization of the menstrual cycle in the following month.

It is an altruistic gift that helps infertile women to have a child. The law allows financial compensation to the donor for the inconvenience of the procedures associated with ovarian stimulation and collection of oocytes.

According to Law 3192/2017 “For female donors, the maximum limit corresponds to double the value of the Social Support Index enforced at the time of donation of oocytes”, that is currently 1 018 euros.
